Charitable and Volunteer Work: A Noble Duty and a Social Necessity
Charitable and volunteer work is a religious and social obligation in Islam, aimed at achieving solidarity and serving the community. It is a noble pursuit sought by virtuous individuals with generous souls and giving hearts. It signifies high moral character and reflects the purity, chivalry, and kindness of its doer, who seeks only the pleasure of Allah and the great reward from Him.
It is one of the greatest forms of goodness, highly praised by Allah in the Holy Quran:
"There is no good in most of their private conversations, except those who enjoin charity or kindness or reconciliation between people. And whoever does that seeking the pleasure of Allah, We will grant him a great reward." (Surah An-Nisa, 4:114)
The impact of charitable and volunteer work is profound on both individuals and society. It serves as a shield for its doer, as acts of kindness protect against misfortunes. A prime example is Lady Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), the first wife of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who was his greatest support after the revelation of the message. She comforted him with her wealth, love, and compassion. When the Prophet returned to her in distress after his experience in the Cave of Hira, she reassured him, saying:
"No, by Allah! Allah will never disgrace you. You maintain family ties, speak the truth, help the needy, support the destitute, serve your guests generously, and assist in good causes."
Today, with these humble words, I express my deep admiration, love, and pride for the immense generosity and blessed efforts of one of the leading figures in charity and philanthropy in the Arab and Islamic world—Dr. Abdullah bin Matouq Al-Matouq. We consider him as such, and Allah is his true judge, for we do not praise anyone over Allah.
Dr. Abdullah is truly one of the pioneers of volunteer and charitable work and a distinguished personality with a prominent status in the State of Kuwait. He serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Islamic Charitable Organization and Special Advisor to the Secretary-General of the United Nations. The International Islamic Charitable Organization is one of the most important humanitarian, relief, and development institutions in the Arab and Islamic world. Its large-scale projects, diverse initiatives, and presence in international and UN forums set it apart. The organization provides aid, relief, and donations to those affected by disasters, wars, and crises without discrimination and without involvement in politics or ethnic conflicts.
Additionally, the organization focuses on endowment, social, and relief projects, as well as basic infrastructure development, training courses, and building mosques and schools. Its activities extend regionally and internationally across Asia, Africa, Europe, and beyond.
Under the leadership of Dr. Abdullah, along with the Board of Directors and dedicated staff, the organization has worked as a unified team, achieving numerous accomplishments. Their efforts have brought about positive changes that empowered the needy, the poor, and refugees in the fields of education, culture, economy, and health, enabling them to make meaningful contributions to their societies through high-quality, innovative programs and effective partnerships.
In conclusion, I sincerely pray to Allah to grant success and guidance to all those working in the International Islamic Charitable Organization. I particularly ask for blessings for Dr. Abdullah, the Board of Directors, and all staff members, praying that Allah blesses their efforts, lives, families, and wealth. May He accept their deeds, reward them abundantly, and place their service to humanity in the balance of their good deeds. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the Answerer of Prayers.
